It’s an understatement to say I had fantastic Mexican food in Mexico City. But as delicious as tacos, pan dulce, and homey cooked meat with mole are, I don’t think these things are what makes the cdmx food scene so special.
Don’t get me wrong, I would say these things make the food scene exceptional, but the truly special thing about any major food city are the things that catch you by surprise.
In cdmx, the surprise for us was the sheer abundance of truly excellent international offerings. Not only is it executed well, it’s that it’s so beautifully blended with Mexican technique and flavour.
We dined on Indian dishes prepared with Mexican flare, absolutely inhaled Korean food highlighting Mexican flavours and enjoyed good old fashioned Neapolitan pizza that utilized ingredients more traditional to Mexican cuisine than Italian. Some fusions were clearly made with intention and thoughtfulness, others had the kind of fusion that naturally takes place when foreign dishes spring up in a country. I went out of my way to indulge in a fair share of international restaurants while here in the name of sampling truly unique and delicious food, and I’d say the mission was a success!
